Favela Vidigal stretches across the steep slopes of the Two Brothers peak between the up-market districts of Leblon and São Conrado, offering the most spectacular views in the whole of Rio de Janeiro. Our bespoke tour lets you explore its heart in a safe, informed way, brimming with positive energy. Over three action-packed hours you will discover a world no hotel brochure can show you, while meeting the people who build it every day.
The adventure begins at the foot of the hill. We hop on licensed mototaxis – the only transport that deftly weaves around tight bends and steep switchbacks. The riders, clearly identified by their vests, whisk participants on a few-minute, adrenaline-fuelled journey up to the highest viewpoint, Mirante do Arvrão. From here, as you take in the first panoramic sweep across the gleaming beaches of Ipanema and the blue Atlantic, you will understand why locals say “Vidigal is Rio’s balcony”.
From the top we descend on foot through a maze of narrow lanes. Our guide – a native “vidigalense” who knows every shortcut and courtyard – shares the history of the favela, its informal organisation and the neighbourhood code of solidarity. En route we pause at colourful murals and visit studios of social and artistic projects supporting children and young people. We chat with local creatives, hearing the tap of hammers and swish of paint rather than the film-school gunshots – this is today’s Vidigal, creative and proud.

Half-way down we break at a terrace bar. An ice-cold, “earth-cooled” beer tastes better here than anywhere else, and the view of the rocky Morro Dois Irmãos (the Two Brothers peak) stays etched in your memory. Those who wish can order a drone photo of the whole group – a spectacular keepsake showing the favela’s cascading rooftops and the endless ocean. With a little luck we may also catch a capoeira display or a samba batucada when residents bring their drums out into the street.
We start the tour at the exit of Avenida Niemeyer, where our local guide meets us. The programme lasts about 2.5–3 hours; we finish at the foot of the hill, from where it is only a few minutes’ walk to Leblon beach or a short taxi ride back to your hotel. The price covers the mototaxi ride and the services of a Polish-speaking guide. A symbolic cervejinha at the viewpoint bar, plus extras such as drone shots or a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu or capoeira show, are paid individually on site.
Safety is our priority. Vidigal is regarded as one of the calmest favelas, yet it follows its own rules. Please stay with the group, refrain from photographing areas marked “no photo” by the guide, and avoid displaying jewellery. You will receive full details before we set off, and the guide watches over the group at all times.
Remember to take out travel insurance that covers motorcycle rides. The tour is not suitable for people with limited mobility, those suffering from claustrophobia, or anyone uneasy on two wheels. Wear sturdy shoes with grip, carry a light backpack, and keep your hands free – it makes balancing on steps and handrails much easier.
If you crave adventure, want to challenge cinematic stereotypes with a reality built on neighbourly cooperation, and are open to the true, pulsating energy of Rio, this experience is made for you.
Book your date, strap on your helmet and ready your camera: Vidigal is waiting to reveal its most beautiful side.
